Exploring Oaklands School

Emma Frampton —

The new children that started this term got to go on an adventure with Miss Frampton and learn more about their school.

We went for a walk around the school to see all the places we can play and the places that are out of bounds.

We talked about the sandpit and how when the black cover is on that means it is too wet and we cannot play in it.  We also saw that there are some sunshades above the sandpit.  This means that if we leave our sunhat at home we can still play in the sandpit because it is shaded.

We talked about the court areas and which side of the court is for the juniors.  We looked at all the balls that Mr Sy puts out each morning for the Kākano children to use and we talked about how we put them back in the bucket when we are finished using them or at the end of play.

We talked about the field and looked for shady areas - just in case we forget our sunhats! We also saw the gate at Jarrow Place, so we talked about how when we are at school and during playtime we do not go outside the gate.

Lastly, we visited the playground and talked about which playground we can play on and how we cannot play on the Year 3/4 playground because the equipment is too hard.  We even practiced playing on the playground.  It was lots of fun!

Physically active play on the playground can help children to:

  • develop large muscles, strength and balance
  • develop flexibility and coordination including hand–eye coordination
  • develop skills such as throwing, catching, hopping, skipping, climbing and balancing
  • develop awareness of space, such as over/under, in front/behind, on top/beneath, inside/outside
  • develop mathematical concepts such as long/short, big/small, wide/narrow
  • be confident in controlling their bodies and learn their limits
  • learn to cooperate and share
  • understand that physical activity is fun and can release tension.
