Hub 3 Week 3 in review

Jo-Ann O'Loughlin —

We have enjoyed another busy week of learning in Hub 3. It's sausage sizzle and Juicie day this Thursday 15th August. Sausage money ($2) needs to come on Wednesday please.

This week our First Aid lesson with St John's Ambulance personnel was postponed. We hope that we may be able to have this lesson one day in the future.

Reading

We are continuing to enjoy our chapter chat book 'The Magic faraway tree' by Enid Blyton.  We look forward to hearing a new chapter every day and finding out what is happening in the story.  It is great that so many student are putting in a huge effort with the chapter chat activities during their Reading time. We are also impressed with the number of our capable readers who are reading their own choice of chapter book at home.

One group had a book about string games and now we have many students who can make shapes like cups, the Eiffel tower and bridges with a piece of wool between their hands.  We have also discovered that many parents are very talented with string games.

Writing

We are learning to use adjectives to describe the characters in The Faraway tree. Miss O'Loughlin's Writing groups did a great job of describing  Moonface and some other characters like Silky or the Saucepan man.   Here are some examples of our writing -

Moonface has a big face and he is very, very, very nice. He always has a candle because it is very dark at night. Also he likes eating cheese.  Briti.

Silky is from The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. Silky is a fairy - or maybe she is a pixie! She has wings so she can fly. Silky is a girl and she is holding a wand.  She has lots of friends like Joe, Beth, Frannie, Rick, Moonface and Saucepan man.  They all went on an exciting adventure.  There are many other people who live in the faraway tree like Mr Watzisname and Angry Pixie.  The faraway tree is magical - some of it is above the clouds!      Liam

Moonface is a kind, happy person because he lives with all the happy people in the faraway land.  Ethan.

Moonface has a really round head and he lives in a very round house. He's very helpful, friendly and of course very funny with such a big head!  Sean.

Hi! I'm Saucepan man . I like making saucepans and kettles. I have saucepans all over my body even on my eyes! I am very silly .                     George

Saucepan man has saucepans on him everywhere apart from his face and his hands! When he walks his saucepans rattle really noisily. He has lots of friends who are called names like Moonface, Mr Watzisname, Joe and Beth. He lives in a tree called the magic faraway tree.  Mariam

Silke is a fairy and she lives in the trees. She has some friends and they are called  Moonface and the Saucepan man.  Harmanpreet.

My favourite character is Saucepan man. He is covered in kettles but not his head or hands or feet! He is very nice but he hears things wrong and  Moonface gets angry at him. He is so funny!      Chloe.

Moonface in 'The Faraway tree' is one of my favourite characters. I like him because he is very, very, very nice and he is boss of the faraway tree. Mr Moonface has a round head and pointy ears.   Carter.

Saucepan man is deaf. For example if you said " Let's eat some ice cream"  he might think that you said " Lets eat some broccoli!!. He has lots of kettles and saucepans. he is silly and funny.  Saucepan man is very weird and he looks just like us except that he has kettles and saucepans. Dylan.

Maths

In Miss O'Loughlin's maths groups we have been learning about rounding numbers like 58 up to 60 and 159 to 160. Some of us can round numbers in the thousands like 1393 down to 1390.

We have been looking at fractions again and making sure we know about 1/4, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/5.  Some of us know about percentages and decimals like 1/2 =50% and .5.
