Year 7&8 Writing - Careers Descriptions

Lance Muller —

This term the Year 7 and 8 students have been looking at careers. Part of our careers education programme involved the students researching a chosen career and then writing about these. Below are some great examples  of our careers writing.

Interior Design....by Ashley White.

My chosen career is Interior designer. This job involves discussing and providing information and advice for clients. You will have to be able to:put clients requirements into reality, plan and design interior designs and be able to adapt to what's in and what’s not. You will have to design furniture or fittings well, work with architects and other contractors when designing a new space. To become a Interior designer you will have to think about academic subjects required, personal requirements and useful experience.

Firstly, there are some subjects that you can take at high school that’ll help you gain entry to tertiary training or a university entrance qualification is required also, some subjects in high school will help you with this. To be an interior designer you need to consider certain subjects (art and art history, English, graphics, computing and maths) To become an interior designer you usually need a degree or diploma in interior design although, some employers may also accept people with degrees in related areas such as architecture or industrial design. As well as meeting these education requirements you will also have to meet personal requirements.

Secondly personal requirements for you to achieve being an interior designer include being :imaginative, creative, accurate with an eye for detail, good at communicating and able to accept criticism. You don’t just need to adapt to these personal requirements ;you may also need some more useful experience in some other areas.

Thirdly, useful experience for being an interior designer are any work related to rebuilding or refitting building interiors, industrial design or other design work, architecture or architectural draughting work.

Finally to become an interior designer you will have some education requirements which include a degree or diploma. For personal requirements you basically just have to be creative with an eye for detail and be able to accept criticism. Also useful experience includes just being used to the type of environment you will be in overall you will have to work hard in these different areas to achieve a degree or diploma. I think this will be a good job for me because I really like redecorating my room and changing it around. So if you meet all these requirements interior design will come a lot and I mean a lot easier to you.

Architect...by Scott Farr

“My chosen career is a Architect”. Architecture includes using drawing skills for plans, and measurements so you can design strong structures. Subjects that you could take in high school are mathematics, geometry, trigonometry , algebra and precalculus. Sciences and physics is handy to know too.

The pay that an architect gets 40,000 to 60,000 a year! That’s if you're a architectural graduate of course. Working conditions are if a client has requirements then you do a site inspection.the training that you need to have is a bachelor's degree and five years of training.

Chances of getting this job are average because of the amount of workers at the time. Other info that you might need to know is knowing thing like what is the strongest shape which will come in handy, because when it comes to building and designing things like that are good to know. Overall this job is good for me because it’s something that I would enjoy.

Air Force Officer.....Josh Fentiman

My chosen career is an Air force officer, An air force officer works in the air force and there are 5 ranks; Air force officer cadets, Pilot officers, flying officers, flight lieutenants and squadron leader. Because of the different ranks there are different pay ranges. They fly aircraft, train people, help in disaster relief. To be an Air Force officer you need to think about Education Requirements personal requirements and useful experience.

You need to have NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy credits, Each air force officer specialist role has specific NCEA requirements. Useful subjects include English, maths and science. Also a 7-week Joint Officer Induction Course (JOIC) at the RNZAF base at Woodbourne near Blenheim [At the top of the south island.]because you need to learn how to do the job. You don’t just need these education requirements you also need personal requirements.

You need to be; disciplined and organised, Confident careful and accurate, with an eye for detail, efficient and able to work well under pressure, able to manage and lead people, able to solve problems and make decisions and good at communicating. To be an air force officer it is good if you had some useful experiences.

Any work involving close teamwork and leadership, previous flying experience or work with planes and experience as an air force airman/airwoman and doing ATC (Air Training Corps) Would help you become an Airforce officer. Although you don’t need to have these but they would help.
