Axel and Hazel Cull - Sporting success

Grant Forman —

Read on to find out about the talented Axel and Hazel Cull

Azel (Yr 5) is a keen BMX and Cyclocross rider, and has been doing very well in his recent racing.

Recently Axel has been competing in the Southern Cyclocross series. ( This combines mountain biking crossed with a road bike on gravel, wet grass and mud).

In the photo of Axel, he placed 3rd riding so well against older kids on a single speed.

Not to be outdone, Axel's amazing sister, Hazel (Yr 2) also rode, earning the Best Spirit Rider. Her prize was an awesome pair of sunnies.

Some awesome boys interviewed Axel:

Q = Tell us about the dips

Axel --> I did another race last week, and there was a big dip, and I had to go down it and then I had to go up and out. I had to get off my bike, put it over my shoulders and carry it upstairs, and then ride down

Q = Was it hard with no suspension?

Axel --> zero gears, zero suspension only one gear - Yes, it was hard, everyone else hadd gears and suspension. I started at the back of the line. I came 50 overall, but 5th in my level.

Q = Were you sore after the race?

Axel --> In my most recent race it was pretty hard, very muddy with a sidetrack that allowed me to go around a muddy wet puddle. I used this track to overtake others.

Q = What days do you do it on?

Axel --> Every 3 weeks on a Sunday. If you are interested, search up Southern Cross (cyclocross). The logo is green and black.

Q = How many kms was it?

Axel  --> We didn't do kms, we raced for 1 hour. I did 6 laps.

Q = How fast did you go?

We didn't have a speed reader. My fastest lap was my last lap, which is not the usual.

Q = Have you fallen or crashed?

Yes, many times, it part of the fun of it. You just get back up and keep on going.

Well done, Axel and Hazel. Oaklands kids out there enjoying their sport.
