Matariki in Hub 5

Steve Ladbrook —

For the last two weeks we have been learning about Matariki

In Hub 5 the students have been learning about Matariki in their Literacy Classes as it was integrated into the reading programme.

Students also got to choose a Matariki project to work on. The choices were creating an audiobook of one of the Matariki stories, creating Matariki artwork or helping create a Matariki display for the Hub display competition.

You can listen to the audiobooks here. These were shared with the junior part of the school.

Matariki art and display

A large group of students chose the art option with a group creating a ‘Matariki Star’. This involved creating a design for two large and two small stars. These were then cut out and arranged into one combined star.

A number of students worked on origami stars, a number worked on the display title, glitter constellations and information boards.

A ‘display set up crew’ of Abigail, Lily T, Holly, Katie, Kaela and Mela spent a couple of morning tea and lunch breaks co-ordinating and putting up the display. They did an amazing job, even having time to pose for a couple of snaps.
