2D and 3D Shapes

Shannon King —

In 1SK and 1CG we have been learning about the 2D and 3D shapes. The children were given a problem from NZ Maths:

Odd One Out

Meadow, Toby, Jubilee and Jayden Shaw are looking at the objects.

Meadow says, Hey, the square is the odd one out.

Toby says, No, Meadow, the circle is the odd one out!

Jubilee says, No, it is the box!

Jayden Shaw says, Well you are ALL wrong! The pentagon is clearly the odd one out.

Who is right and why?

They had to sort the different shapes into categories to work out which one is the odd one out was however there was no correct answer for the question. The children were able to compare the features such as faces, corners and edges of each of the shapes and compare the attributes of a 2D and a 3D shape.

We investigated where shapes are within the hub, our playground and within the school. During Action Stations the children showed how they could use shapes by creating their own masterpieces and building towers and bridges. They had to think about how each shape fits into and on top of each other, just like builders and architects.

When looking at and comparing different 3D shapes we followed different templates to create our own. We made Cubey the Cube, Cindy the Cylinder, Peter the Pyramid and Reggie Rectangular the Prism. Through building the 3D shapes we were able to explore faces- What is a face in a shape? How many does each shape have? How many faces do we have? Corners- What is a corner? Why do shapes have corners? Where are corners within the classroom? Edges- What is a edge? How many edges do each shape have? -to count these on our first shape, Cubey the Cube we put stickers on each edge to make sure we didn't count each one more than once.

On our final shape Reggie the Rectangular Prism, Mrs King challenged us to make  by ourselves. We had to cut the shape out; following the lines, remember which way to fold the tabs, glue each tab together and all going well we would have a Rectangular Prism that had even sides......the children succeeded!
