What is a running record?
A running record is an assessment tool used across all year levels. Teachers use a running record to observe how the student is reading, what strategies they use when they come to a word they don't know and what they need to be taught next to support them to be confident, fluent readers.
To administer a running record teachers invite the student to sit with them and read a book that they would have had as part of an instructional lesson earlier in the week. The teacher records what the student is reading and makes note of any errors, corrections and strategies the student is using while reading. When students become fluent readers teachers also check for comprehension by asking questions about the text they have just read.
The graph above will be shared with you during your child's student led conference later this term. It will show the level your child was working at at the end of each term. The green boxes on the graph indicate where your child should be reading at the end of each year at school. In the example above you can see the dark blue box indicates where the student is reading at the end of Term 1. As the student in this example is a Year 1 student he/she is well on track to meet the expected level of green by the end of Term 4.
If you would like more information about your child's progress in reading please do not hesitate to contact your child's whanau teacher or access this parents guide to the colour wheel.
