Reading in Year 7 & 8
What's happening for Reading in the Year 7&8 hub.
Next week we are starting our second round of novel studies. The students did one study in the second half of Term 1 and we had positive feedback from the students as well as pleasing progress results. Our latest Asttle test results showed an effect size of 0.14 - this is higher than the expected 0.1 at this time of year.
The purpose of the novels is to teach specific goals from the National Standards as well as make links to prior learning and provoke new learning. We have a strong focus on linking the novels to non fiction ideas that run along side the themes present in the particular novel. For example, last term one group read a novel called: Abandon Ship (the diary of a girl who was on the Wahine); this group was able to do a lot of research and new learning that related to the Wahine Disaster and make many connections to the themes in the book.
This week the students will be given the chance again to look and select from the several novels we are offering.
