Koru Games Success for Oaklands

Lance Muller —

The  Koru Games was held last week from Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 September. Oaklands school was represented by 9 teams across 4 sports.

The Koru Games is an annual sports tournament held in the Selwyn District. The event, now in its third year, is modelled on the successful AIMS Games held each year in Tauranga and is growing from strength to strength. This year nearly 2500 Year 7 & 8 students from 40 schools around the South Island were involved in the three days of competition.

All of the Oaklands Teams represented us with pride. A highlight was seeing all of our students demonstrate their CARE values at all times. This did not go unnoticed by others and it was great to receive positive feedback on our teams from coaches and parents from other schools.

Our teams have trained exceptionally hard in the lead up to this event and it was very satisfying to come away with some top results. Our Girls netball team placed a very creditable 6th place and our boys volleyball team fought hard to earn a Bronze medal in their competition. Our Boys A Football were unbeaten throughout the tournament, coming away with a well deserved first place, receiving gold medals and trophy for their efforts.

Thanks to all of the parents who provided assistance in the lead up to and also during the tournament. We really appreciate your help.

The bar has been set high and we look forward to next years Games which will no doubt be an even bigger and better affair.
