Peer Mediators - Big Day Out 2019

Sarah Baker —

On Thursday 8th August 5 Peer Mediators were lucky enough to attend the Peer Mediators Big Day Out. We spent the day at Wharenui Primary School with 8 other schools continuing our learning of Peer Mediation.

Karlie - I really enjoyed listening to school presentations, playing different games and learning new things about Peer Mediation. We watched a few inspirational videos that were either about being a leader, not giving up or anti-bullying. Of those videos, my favourite was the one with the man who had no arms or legs because it taught me to be grateful for what I’ve got. My favourite activity was the drawing version of Whispers. Something I learnt today that I’ll be taking with me that is once you say something hurtful to someone, it’s hard to undo the damage.

Libby - I really enjoyed all of the activities because we got to meet Peer Mediators from 8 other schools and learn about how they solve problems. I also really enjoyed watching the videos because they were really inspirational and taught me to be grateful for what I have. I was impressed at how well the students from Darfield High School could lead the activities and made them really fun to be a part of. One of the activities they had for us was to play a drawing version of  Whispers, I didn’t think I would enjoy it, but I did in the end. Overall, I really enjoyed the Peer Mediators Big Day Out.

Rey - The best part of the day were the presentations, videos and games. I particularly enjoyed the games that were hosted by Darfield High School. Most of all I enjoyed the activity where we had to put ourselves in a group related to the name, colour or animal on our sticker. I enjoy being a Peer Mediator because I get to help lots of people and build better relationships. My favourite video was the man with no arms or legs, I got inspired by him. Something I learnt today was to be nice to a bully and then the bully will be nice.

Emma - I really enjoyed going to the Peer Mediators Big Day Out because we got to do heaps of activities with different schools. My favourite part was when Darfield High School led the games because it was really fun. I liked how we watched videos and liked getting to know Mediators from other schools. My favourite video we watched was how to stop bullying from Darfield High School.

Missy - I really enjoyed the Peer Mediators Big Day Out. My favourite bit was when the speaker called Dante who works with Pillars talked to us. Pillars is a charity for children that have a parent in jail. After Dante finished talking we had a quiz and I won some lollies for answering the question right. We also played a game where we had a label on our backs and we had to organise ourselves into categories without talking. We also played a game like Whispers but drawing and after we had to crumple our drawings up and then try to put it back to the way it was. There was a video that we watched and it was about how to stop bullies bullying, if you say nice things and not get angry or upset.
