Te Reo in Hub 5
This term one of our focuses in Hub 5 and across the Kauri team, is increasing the student frequency and exposure to Te Reo. We aim to be including more Te Reo into our daily conversations by doing regular work on sentence structure, vocabulary and phrases.
We kicked off the first week of Term 3 with a focus on the command "Rārangi mai" - Line up here. The students have been responding well to the command recognising and translating the Māori to English in their heads.
Here is what the students think:
Isis - We will now know more phrases in Māori that will add to our vocabulary as we get older.
Ayla - I think it's fun to learn Te Reo and Māori words to help us feel more confident around other people who speak Māori. It helps with our Mihi and pronunciation, seeing teachers give it a go first.
This week we have a focus on "Rārangi atu" - Line up over there. We will be continuing to build up our vocabulary by using these phrases in conjunction with the weekly focus phrase, to cement our new knowledge.
To go along with our classroom knowledge we explored the phrases "What is this?" He aha tēnei? and "What is that?" He aha tēna?
We have decided on a 3-pronged plan to improve the use and representation of Te Reo in our classrooms
[1] Theme focus eg. the classroom and celebration themes
[2] Everyday classroom phrases (sit down, coe to the mat, pass the pen, open the door, well done, any questions, do you understand, what is this, how do you say … in Māori/English etc)
[3] Correct pronunciation focus
Matua Rihari is helping voice record the correct pronunciation of the Māori words and phrases to give our teachers and students the confidence to give it a go!
If you feel confident to use Te Reo around your home we encourage you to reach out for any resources we may be able to support you with!
