Oaklands' Heroes are coming to school next week.

Trish Patten —

Our Heroes Literacy Week is next week. Are you ready for some fun, learning and competitions?

The Oaklands School Literacy Week is ready to roll next week, 5 - 7 November. Our theme is “Heroes”.

The teachers on our team are gearing up several school-wide and Hub learning activities for our students to participate in. Below you can read of some of the activities that are being held for our students.

One activity teachers and students all enjoy in Literacy Week is when School Staff read to classes/hubs other than the ones they work in. Senior Management, Office Staff, Teacher Aides, Librarians and Ground staff are part of this exchange as well as teachers. These reading times are happening at 12:15 on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th November.

Competitions

One of the competitions for students is to design a superhero poster - “How to be an Oaklands Superhero” A prize will be awarded to the winning poster in each Hub. Another one is the Superhero Comic Strip competition - Design your own superhero and create a story about it - eg introduction, problem, climax, solution.

Dress Up Day

On Wednesday the 7th of November we are celebrating Literacy Week with a Hero parade!

We are encouraging students to dress up as their hero, whether they be a fictional hero like Spiderman, or a real life hero such as Sophie Pascoe or a family member.

Both the Kākano and the Kauri parade will be held outside on the courts in front of Rooms 22 and 23.

The Kākano parade will begin at 9:15 am until 9:55am. The Kauri parade will be located in the same area at 10am until 10:30.

We are inviting parents to join us and cheer on the children as they show off their costumes.

Favourite Place to Read

Another school-wide competition we are holding is to find the best photo of your favourite place to read. It may be at home or at school, or it may be reading to your dog or cat or goldfish! Think about where you enjoy reading, get someone to take a photo of you in that spot, and email the photo to ali.ward@oaklands.school.nz .We will print the photos and display them in the library. There will be a prize for the best photo.

There will be a Superhero display in the Library plus a launch in assembly to introduce the super-hero pozis.

Where is the hero?

Each morning there will be 6 small Superhero cards to find in the playground. Maximum one per student. If you are lucky enough to find one, keep it safe. Bring your Superhero to Mrs Ward in the library at lunchtime. You may win a prize!

Where are the Superheroes?

Each day there will be Quiz Clues for Heroes. Some of the Heroes will be real people, some will be fictional (made up).

There will be 3 Quizzes running, one for the NE/Y1 and Y2 children, one for Hub 3 and 4, and one for Hub 5 and above.

The clues will be in the morning notices, but the teachers will have a copy too. There are answer sheets to record your guess, name and class, and there will be boxes in the library foyer to put your entry in. At the end of Book Week, names will be drawn from each of the boxes. The winners will get a prize.

Let's get ready for a fun week learning about heroes, being an Oaklands hero, completing competitions, and learning about heroes.

A big thanks go to our Teacher "heroes" who are working hard to make this week fun and successful for everyone: Mrs Ward and Mrs Ward, Mrs Boston, Mrs McLeod, Mr Forman, Mrs Gill, Mrs Casey and Mrs Patten.
