Year 6 Hub Learning
Lately in the Year 6 Hub the students have been learning about a range of new topics to finish off the the Term. In Literacy the students have been learning about Persuasive Writing and Speeches. For Maths the students have been learning about Algebra and for Integrated Learning they have been doing Dance.
Speeches
The students were asked to write about a hero. It could be anyone they considered to be a leader and demonstrated the qualities of a hero. We have a wide range of people the children wrote and spoke about like movie stars, directors, explorers, sports stars and family. Here are some comments from the children:
Anna-Bella: In the Year 6 Hub we are doing speeches and we did them on our NZ hero and mine was Appo Hocton. He is my hero because he is my 7th great grandfather and I really wanted to learn more about him, he is a hero because he jumped off a ship and survived .
Ben: In the Year 6 hub we have been doing speeches and we did them about someone who we consider a NZ Hero to us. My NZ hero was Steven Adams, the reason I picked him is because he is successful leader and relatable. He is relatable because he loves basketball and video games like me.
Aden: In the Year 6 Hub lately we've been writing a speech about a famous New Zealander, my hero I chose was Sir Edmund Hillary because he showed resilience. He was helpful and he was successful by doing what he wanted to do and didn't let people stop him from climbing Mount Everest. He was kind to everyone too.
Isabel: For my NZ hero I wrote about Taika Waititi . The reason why I chose Taika Waititi was because he is a good person e.g good sense of humour, has a kind heart and is a funky personalty.
Niamh: For my NZ hero I did Sir Edmund Hillary because climbing up Mount Everest in the thin air and with the heavy equipment would've been torture. I would've given up but he didn't and he got all the way to the summit and I admire his resilience.
Hugo: The hero I wrote about was Lionel Messi. The reason why I chose him for my hero was because he is resilient and loyal. He never gives up no matter what. This is why he is my hero.
Matthew: The hero I picked was my godfather Shane because he is determined, hard working, positive and resilient. He went back to Teachers College after suffering a brain injury.
The results for the Year 6 Speech Final was.....
1st: Anna-Bella Forman
2nd: Addison Buck
3rd: Matthew Randall
Well done to our other finalists... Amelia R, Aden V and Conor
Maths: Algebra
Over the past 2 weeks we have begun with a focus on Algebra. The students have been working in groups and learning about applying rules to numbers, looking for patterns and in some cases graphing these on a line graph. Here are some student voice
James: We have been learning about algebra and the two different rules the recursive rule and he function rule we have been doing booklets, sheets, book work etc. Book work is harder because it takes longer, for example we have done a table that we have used to find the rule.
Ben: For maths we have been learning about patterns and functions we have been given work sheets to work on we did them on minutes and litres, days and songs and hours and km travelled and for them. We had rules like x 8 + 1 so we would have to times the number by 8 then add 1.
Dance
Over the past few weeks the Year 6 Hub have been learning a line dance to 'Cotten Eye Joe'. The students have been challenged to show our learner qualities of Self Awareness and Resilience.
Rose B: We needed to show resilience and self awareness because it was tricky to learn the dance. If we showed our learner qualities it would eventually be muscle memory and we would all be in time.
Morgan: We needed to show self awareness and resilience because it was hard to keep in time with everyone but if we showed resilience and self awareness we could be slightly more in time and we would be more successful in being in time.
Harley: We had to show self awareness and resilience because we had to learn a new dance and it was hard to keep in time with everybody and clap at the same time.
Jordyn: We had to show resilience in dance because some people didn't know the the dance and now we are more in time and it looks good.
Art Rotation
The students have been doing Visual Art, Drama and Music with the hub teachers. Attached is some 'New Zealand Native Bird Art', inspired by New Zealand Artist Don Binney.
