Calendar Art - Cultural Narrative

Bryan Brown —

Check out our awesome art work!

Here is a link to the awesome art work which has been produced in the Year 7/8 Hub!

Firstly, students had to learn what a Cultural Narrative was. The definition they came up with was;

  • It’s about history of a culture

  • It’s a story you tell about your culture

  • It tells how the culture came into existence

  • It can be tell how the world was created - creation story

  • Every culture has one

  • There are morals to to the story

  • Passed on down through generations

From there they learned about the History and Traditions of Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere), Manawhenua (authority held by an iwi, hāpu or whanau over the land), Ngā Tūtohu Whenua(the cultural significance of the surrounding landscape) and the native flora and fauna of the South West Zone.

They then used all of this information to complete a task which was to create an impressionist style artwork using soft pastels that shows elements of the cultural narrative for the South-West Zone.

They watched this video  which showed the different styles of drawing using pastels. The art work has some criteria which had to be incorporated into the image;

  • Contain at least 4 elements of the cultural narrative.

  • Paper must be landscape

  • Use at least 4 visual art conventions - see your Chalk Pastels Modelling book in Google Drive

  • Use the chalk pastel techniques you learnt in the Visual Arts Unit

Here are the creations, enjoy!
