Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka is a PB4L school. PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning.
PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence and at the foundation of PB4L is the school's vision and values.
At Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka the CARE values underpin PB4L. We also use a range of strategies to create positive learning environments for everyone. Over the next few weeks we will look at each of these strategies in more detail:
- Greeting students as they arrive at school and checking in with them to find out how they are feeling. We use the Zones of Regulation for this.
- We use Pause Breathe Smile activities to calm students and help them to better manage their emotions. Belly breathing also ensures the brain is ready for learning.
- CARE lessons and Restorative circles - each day we use circles to learn about the CARE values, discuss issues that are happening in our teams and share ideas about how to improve our team.
- Students are acknowledged and rewarded for demonstrating the CARE values through our CARE certificates.
- KiVa lessons support students to understand what bullying is and why it is wrong. They also learn how to get help for people being bullied. In Term 2 we take part in Bully Free NZ week.
- Cybersafety programmes teach students how to use technology respectfully and stay safe online.
