Principal's welcome

Margaret Trotter —

It is my pleasure to welcome your child and your family to Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka.

Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka is a full primary school situated in the South-West of Christchurch. The school officially opened in 1964 and caters for children from New Entrants to Year 8.

Our teaching and learning programmes are underpinned by our vision of being 'life-long learners who aspire to excellence' and our CARE values (Community, Active Thinking, Respect and Excellence).

We value our diversity and celebrate the many cultures and backgrounds of our learners and families. There are many opportunities for learners to express their own culture and to learn about other cultures. Our cultural narrative was gifted to us in September 2019 and helps us to honour our bi-cultural partnership with Te Taumutu Rūnanga and honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Our staff are caring, passionate and focused on supporting all students to be the best they can be. We value professional development and are committed to living our vision of being life long learners. We enjoy strong governance from our Board of Trustees and have an active PTA who support the school with raising funds for resources and building connections in our community.

We believe in nurturing the whole child and provide many opportunities for students to participate in education outside the classroom, cultural activities such as Kapa Haka, sporting competitions such as Jump Jam and Basketball, whole school productions every second year and extension activities such as chess competitions and Literacy quiz to name a few.

We grow leaders at Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka and value the contribution our school leaders make as role models to our younger students. We have a wide range of leadership opportunities that cater to different strengths and interests.

We hope you enjoy being a part of our school community and I look forward to getting to know you all.

Nga mihi nui

Caroline Martin
