Family Korowai Cloak Activity for Māori Language Week

Tash Baker —

Read below for some information about our collaborative Korowai Cloak activity for you to do with your children at home next week.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As a part of Māori Language Week, we are focussing on Matariki (The Māori New Year). A part of Matariki is spending time with whānau and reflecting on/setting goals and this year we are hoping to get families involved in creating a unique addition to a Korowai Cloak. Korowai cloaks tell a story and represent whānau/unity and we want to tell the story of our Oaklands families.

Each student will be given 2x paper feather templates to add to a year level Korowai Cloak, creating their own unique feather design that reflects the goals they have achieved as well as goals for the future. One feather will be an individual feather and the other will go home on Monday to work on as a family and return to school to become part of their year level cloak.

Some ideas to add to your whānau feather are:

  • Family goals

  • Celebrations

  • Special places to your family

  • Special people in your family

  • Quotes

  • Family values

Make your feather bright and colourful! You can add photos, pictures, writing, collage...Be creative!

We would love as many whānau/family feathers to add to the cloaks and represent our Oaklands School community

Please return any completed feathers to your child’s teacher by Thursday 7 July. These will then be put together and displayed in common areas around the school such as the Library.
