Welcome back to an exciting year of learning at Oaklands School.

Caroline Martin —

Our focus for learning this year is "Building". With our rebuild starting this year students will be able to share their thoughts designs and ideas so that together we can build a learning environment that truly meets the needs of our learners now and in the future.

Term 1 - Building Relationships:  The curriculum areas we will be focusing on in Term 1 are Health & Social Sciences.  As part of building relationships students will learn how to keep themselves safe using the "Keeping Ourselves Safe" resource developed by NZ Police.  They will also learn about being safe while online and we use the "Hectors World" resource to support this.  Parents can access information to reinforce cyber safety at home at the Netsafe website:  https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/.  During the term we will also introduce students to programmes such as Circle Time, Bucket Fillers, Pause, Breathe, Smile, KiVa and our CARE values lessons. All of these programmes are designed to support students to build resilience, foster their well being and help them to collaborate with others.  We will also be having a Multi-Cultural celebration and Whanau Hui this term. More information will come out in weeks 1 & 2 regarding these events.

In term 1 we  will also be developing the learner qualities of Belong & Collaborate.

Term 2 - Building Sustainable Practices:  The curriculum focus for term 2 is Science: Living World & Planet Earth and Beyond.  Students will explore themes such as life cycles, protecting our planet, designing new gardens for our school, endangered species and sustaining our edible gardens. Our focus learner qualities for Term 2 are Empathize and Communicate.

Term 3 - Building by Design:  The focus for term 3 is Science & Technology. Students will use the design process to share their solutions to problems  or new ideas  related to our rebuild, e.g ideas for playground design, landscaping solutions. Our focus learner qualities for Term 3 are Question and Connect.

Term 4 - Building Community:  The curriculum focus for Term 4 is Health & the Arts. Students will explore ways to engage with our wider community through communicating the progress of our rebuild and designing performances for the Gala. Our focus learner qualities for Term 4 are Be Resilient and Be Self Aware.

If you have resources, knowledge or skills you are able to contribute to these learning programmes please contact your child's whanau teacher. We really value our collaboration partnerships with parents and whanau and we know that we have some amazing skills among our parent community we would love to tap into!
