Koru Inspired Art

Trish Patten —

This week we have been creating Calendar Art during our Art Attack.

We have learnt about the Koru inspired art of NZ artist Raewyn Harris. Her message about this type of painting is : "Koru inspired paintings reflecting the colours and patterns in nature symbolize the diversity and growth of New Zealand as a nation of the South Pacific."

We have worked through a series of lessons preparing students in creating their own Koru inspired paintings.

On Monday we experimented with colours learning about what colours work well together.  We used paper and crayons to...

  • Try different colour combinations, thinking about complementary colours.

  • Try to blend colours - what happens?

  • Try to go from dark to light using one colour

  • Chose our favourite colour combinations that we then could use in our artwork.

Next we looked at artwork created by artist, Raewyn Harris - Maori designs and Landscapes , watched some movies about how they can be created before practising our own Koru designs.

On Tuesday we used our chosen designs, drew them with chalk and coloured in with crayon in the colour combination we had chosen.

On Wednesday we transferred our design to A3 heavy cartridge paper again using chalk for the lines and colouring in between with our chosen colours.

On Thursday we finished our colouring and chalk lines before applying a cover of black dye. The chalk soaks up all the black dye creating the lines between our koru inspired patterns.

You can see the process in the photos below.

Students will be adding a photo and explanation of their art to their blogs in the next week so you can see what they have been doing, but also feel free to come in and have a look at the great art work they have been creating.

We have witnessed a group of Year 6 students who have been really focussed on their art learning this week.  They have produced some classy art which could grace the walls of your home in the form of a calendar in 2018.  More information about this will come from the PTA later this term.
