Week 4 in Waka Rua!
We have had a busy week in Waka Rua.
C.A.R.E Assembly
On Monday we had a number of students receive their Bronze C.A.R.E certificates. Congratulations to them all on this wonderful achievement.
We also wanted to say a big thank you to the students who presented at our C.A.R.E assembly. You all did such an amazing job and we are so proud of you!
Writing
This week for writing we put the skills we have been learning over the last few weeks to write persuasive letters to Ms Trotter, asking her if we could create something magical for our learning space (hint it involves cooking). We will keep you updated on the response we receive.
Maths
This week we finished up our measurement unit. We have had such an amazing time exploring temperature, time, mass and capacity. We have learnt so much and participated in some awesome (and tasty) science experiments. Next week we are back onto exploring number!
Reading
This week for reading we have been focussing on our phonics and comprehension strategies. It is very important that your child brings their reading folder to school everyday or they cannot bring books home to read. Sometimes they may need reminding to pack it in their school bag. Reading every night with your child is very beneficial to their learning.
Integrated Topic
This week we have been busy exploring the concept of cold. The students engaged in a number of science experiments, exploring how to melt ice, the temperature of water needed to dissolve sugar and
Gymnastics
This week we have continued our gymnastics programme. The students are doing an amazing job making different shapes, such as the straddle, tuck, stretch and pike and how to do a rolly polly. We will be doing gymnastics every Friday during the middle block.
Library
On Friday we are continuing to go to the library during the literacy block. Students are encouraged to get out books to read for their own enjoyment. There is a range of marvellous books that the students can choose from.
Te Reo Maori
Every Tuesday we are so lucky to have Matua Steve come in to our learning space and teach us new waiata, dance moves and simple phrases. Take a look at one of the songs that we have learnt with him.
Friday Learning Rotation
On Friday afternoons, the students in Patere get to engage a exciting learning rotation. There are a variety of learning experiences the students got to pick from, these include learning about and building Castles, using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), 3D art, coding, Japanese, invasion games, soccer, crochet, Kapa Haka, board games and musical instruments. Keep an eye out for some of our amazing, weird and wonderful learning!
PEACE week
This week Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka celebrated Peace week. It is run by The Peace Foundation which was formed in 1975. Their goal is to build peaceful local, national and global communities.
Each year Peace Week has a different theme. This years theme is the Community Connect Project.
With the theme of “community connect” we want to create opportunities to connect with people in our kura, and beyond.
The Peer Mediators planned some amazing activities for the students to participate in during break times this week. This included creating the Wall of Peace, a bookmark donation, rubbish clean up and card writing. Take a look at some of the photos below.
What a busy Week! Looking forward to the week ahead.
