Oaklands School - Community Problem Solving Junior National Champions 2018

Caroline Martin —

After an exciting weekend in Auckland the Eco-Warriors team were awarded the title of Junior National Champions at the 25th Future Problem Solving National Championships held at Carey Park in Auckland.

The Eco-Warriors team have worked so hard this year to develop their project which was submitted for consideration to the judging panel at the end of term 3.  We waited anxiously and were so excited to get the phone call announcing we were going to the finals.  We were only able to take 5 members of the team to Auckland but we made sure that our presentations acknowledged all nine members of the team.

Over the weekend we had to put up a display (see photo below) which showed the process the team had followed. We  were judged on team work and communication skills.  We then had a 30 minute interview with the evaluators.  Mrs Martin was not allowed to help with this so she sat nervously outside! On Saturday night we shared a video put together by the whole team explaining the problem solving process we had followed which was enjoyed by an audience of over 200 people. We have learned so much by talking to other teams and we have made lots of new friends. We can't wait to continue our project next year and encourage everyone to support us in making Oaklands School a rubbish free school.
