Nathan Muirhead —

Kia ora whanau and friends. We celebrate another week of learning and of change. We have changes in focus in Maths, PE and Integrated learning. There have also been some exciting announcements. Read on to learn more!

What we have been doing this week

Hub 6 Full Learner Licence Holders

For the past two weeks, a large focus in class has been the learner licences. Here it is in more detail:

What a learner licence holder does...

  • Works through their ILTs to the best of their ability.

  • Consistently shows their CARE values inside/outside the classroom.

  • Displays a positive attitude when faced with challenges.

  • Seeks help/ is a role model - Helps others.

  • Asks for help when they need it.

  • Keeps up to date with 40 Book/home learning/SSW/SSR

  • Doesn’t give up when stuck - perseveres and has strategies to solve problems.

  • Shows kindness to others.

  • Chooses a good place for their learning.

Learner Licence Holders Can...

  • Can sign themselves and others off on their handwriting and Te Reo Māori activities. (ILTs)

  • Can choose who they work with and where they work. (Inside, Outside)

  • Plan learning schedule

  • Choice around what they work on, once they have completed set learning tasks.

  • Extra Banqer Money - $200 a week.

  • Can sit where they want (Kiva, Stage, Chair) and bump someone up.

Congratulations to the following students who now have their full learner licences:

Zach W, Arman R, Arman N, Ayla, Lily, Jessica, Laura, Willow, Louise, Jesslyn, Josie, Isis

Six more names will be announced next week on Tuesday. Keep up the great work hub 6! If you haven’t been made a full licence holder yet then keep on working on the criteria shown above.

Maths - Fractions

If your child has asked to bring pizza or pies to Maths then it might be due to the new fractions focus. This week the hub has been focusing on different strategies and learning new knowledge. This ranges from identifying fractions, finding fractions of a group and using highest common factors to identify equivalent fractions.

Some classes have been using the Hub 6 2020 Fractions website as well as Sheppard Software Math games.

Maths - Prototec

A tool we are using in class is Prototec maths. This fantastic New Zealand made website is free to use. It focuses on knowledge and skills that children need to learn for being at year 6. The children are tracking their progress and are already seeing gains from their perseverance.

Writing - Persuasive writing

Can you sell snow to an ice capped mountain? Can you convince Mrs Trotter to keep the simile couch? Do you believe there is furniture the school should purchase? These are some of the ideas we have been exploring this week. We are using persuasive techniques and persuasive language to convince our readers and listeners to our ideas.

Journalist Group

Jessica, Leandre and an anonymous writer from Year 6 are our authors of the week. They wrote three great narrative pieces. If you haven’t read their amazing writing so far, make sure you do by going to the week 7 school newsletter or click here.

Integrated learning - Exploring our New Space

This week we have continued to explore systems, processes and furniture that will make our new Hub 6.

For processes, we revised how our role is going to be done in our new space.

For systems and furniture, we began prototyping. We investigated how we could use our space with a scale map, explored book box and bag storage solutions, plants and new furniture.

Athletics

We are springing into a new season with athletics. This Thursday we held our first session focusing on shot put and sprints. There was definitely some excitement in both the field and the track practice. Thank you to Mya for taking some great photos.

PS: Mr Muirhead received two speeding tickets in the sprints courtesy of Willow.

Art options

We have some fantastic silhouette art being created. Children have been picking symbols, images and words that represent them. These are going to make our new space look vibrant and feel like home. Check them out below

40 Book Challenge

As we draw closer to the end of the term, children are beginning to finish their 40 book challenge. Some students have a lot of work to do. The 40 book challenge is a large project that is supported in class but requires time at home to complete.

Thank you to all of you who have been supporting your children with this project. One way that you can help your child with their reading is to ensure that they are reading at home every day for at least 30 minutes. Not only will it help them with completing the challenge but will also upskill their reading and writing. Additionally, another way to help is to ask questions to your child. This helps their comprehension of the text and makes the challenge more meaningful to them. Some example questions are: “What are you reading?”, “Who is your favourite character? Why?”, and “What facts have you learnt from your book?”

Cycle safety

Coming up is Cycle safety. This fantastic programme teaches our children many important road safety rules and how to be safe on a bicycle. We strongly recommend all students do this course and this includes students who do not know how to ride a bike or who have low confidence on a bicycle. They will be fully supported throughout the programme.

Cycle safety have recently created some 3 – 5 min videos about our programme. We welcome you and your child to view them. Here is the link to the Helmet Fitting one, the others can be accessed via our Cycle Safe page Cycle Safe page
