Term 4, Week 1 in Review

Alex HORN —

What happened on the first week of Term 4?

Sun Hats

Are a must, they must come to school every day and need to be full brimmed (no caps) and named.

Reading

Our new reading groups have started this week. In Mr Horn's reading class this week we began learning how to do Digital SMLs, read Junior Journals and identify the difference between a "Story" an "Article" a "Play" and a "Poem". We also learned how to issue chapter books from the library.

Writing

We have a very exciting new writing programme this term. In a combined group with both Mr Horn and Mr Morehu we are learning about narrative writing.

This week we learned about characters and character descriptions. We are creating our own narratives and have designed our protagonist, antagonist and support characters (if you don't know what those words mean you can ask any of the children as we have been learning about them this week).

Maths

Mr Morehu's class has been learning about Geometry and the different kinds of 2D and 3D shapes.

In Mr Horn's maths class we have been asking questions that can be solved in a variety of ways. Here is an example:

A "score" means 20, similar to how a "dozen" means 12. Abraham Lincoln once said "Four score and seven years ago..." how long ago was Mr Lincoln talking about?

Topic

We have been learning about Sun Safety. We are sun safe by wearing sun hats, sunblock, playing in the shade, staying hydrated, and when we are not at school we can also wear sunglasses.

Shake Out

We did a great job at practicing our Earthquake drill as part of NZ Shake Out.
