ESOL Celebration - Matariki Kites

Joanne Casey —

Last term two students from each hub were chosen to celebrate our ESOL learning for term 2.

We listened to the story The Seven Kites of Matariki and looked closely at the different kites and talked about the meaning of Matariki. We answered questions and shared what happens at New Year in each child's culture. Some students have friends and family over for New Year, while other students don't celebrate the New Year. It was beneficial for students to listen and learn about what happens in other cultures.

Next, we chose materials to make our own Matariki kite. Students came up with some great designs and were so happy to take home their kites to show their families.

A special thanks to our two cultural ambassadors Morgan and Rey for leading this activity. It was great to see the older students working together helping the younger students.

We are looking forward to our next celebration of learning later on in the term.
