Danny Hillary —

It's been a big term with lots of classroom learning and extra opportunities for the Year 6 students at Oaklands. Below is a summary that includes comments from the students and their highlights, including 'taking action' in Integrated Learning.

What have you been learning about for Maths this term?

Hugo: I have been learning  algorithms for plus and minus, also some  grid strategy multiplication.

How has Maths Whizz helped you in your learning?

Ethan: Maths Whizz has helped me with my measurement by using the online rulers to measure length.

Aiden: It has helped me with my number lines and place value understanding.

What types of Writing have you been working on this Term?

Amelia: We have been writing Explanations, Simile poems and Moment in time writing. I found it really fun learning how to write in different ways.

How have you enjoyed being involved in the handball in the hall at breaktimes?

Aidan: It's been fun having teachers there to referee because we all follow the rules and replay if there are disputes.

How have you enjoyed being involved in Sport this term?

Jordyn: I play Netball, I gave it a try because on Saturdays I play Rugby. It's been great playing with my friends Rose I and Morgan.  The positions I've played are Centre and Defence.

Leo: I've been playing Basketball on Wednesday. This year I've improved my skills like dribbling and shooting.  We won our last game 6-2.

What were you most proud of in your learning when sharing your 'student led conference'?

Aden: I was most proud of my Mihi because my one is really detailed but I still completed it, and most of my pronunciation was correct.

Tell us about the Year 5/6 Girls basketball tournament on Monday?

Rose and Zoe: We played Marshlands, Hillview, Ashgrove and Paparoa Street. Sam and Fiona  were our managers.  I think the strongest team was Ashgrove because they bet us 24 - 4.  We think that Xanthe had the best day because she was driving the ball to the basket, and getting lots of shots in.

For Integrated Learning, the students have been learning about the big idea: How can I protect the planet and it's dwindling resources?

So what are you doing for 'taking action'?

Tanesha, Riley and Amber: We have a made slideshow about deforestation and a speech.  Our aim is for people to stop cutting down the trees.

Ethan, Leo and Jayden W: Our group has made a windmill that powers an LED light. We have also done some research about how windmills generate electricity.

Neeve, Sarah and Julie: Our group are trying to create a model on how to make dirty water into clean water, so its healthier to drink and tastes better.

Matthew, Max, Luca and Harley; Our group has designed some models to show the most common ways that greenhouse gases are created. We are designing posters to explain and show ways to reduce carbon dioxide.

Hiba, Amelia and Jennifer; We made terrariums to show how a mini water-cycle works. Our posters explain how we used the water resources.

Attached are some photos from 'taking action' this week.
