KiVa - Our Bullying Prevention Programme
KiVa is a bullying prevention programme that has been developed in Finland.
How does KiVa work?
The goal of KiVa is to prevent bullying and to tackle the cases of bullying effectively. The programme is based on decades and is based on three main elements: prevention, intervention and monitoring.
Prevention: to keep bullying from happening
All students are involved through student lessons and online games.
Intervention: tools to tackle bullying
The interventions in KiVa are targeted specifically at the students who have been involved in bullying. Our school uses tools (interviews, restorative conversations, joint goal setting, behaviour plans, timely check-ins) to put an end to bullying. We help both the victim to feel safe and the bully to change.
Annual monitoring
Annual online surveys, for both students and staff provide feedback to help us improve and target our anti-bullying work to particular groups or aspects, such as cyberbullying. The trend in the graph below shows that our work is paying off:

The KiVa team at Oaklands Te Kura o Ōwaka, is made up of representatives from each team:
Mrs Hyde (Deputy Principal)
Mrs Seil (Hub 3)
Miss Pilbrough (Hub7/8)
Mr Hillary (Hub 5/6)
Mr Treweek (Years 1-4)
This team meets weekly to discuss and assign any new cases, monitor and support students who have previously been through KiVa (either as a perpetrator or a victim) and promote KiVa across our school community.
