Learner Qualities that are our focus for Term 4.
This term we focus on the CARE value of Excellence and the Learner Qualities 'Be Resilient' and Be Self Aware'.
At Oaklands we believe that when learners are being resilient they:
- manage their emotions.
- bounce back from adversity
- display self belief
- see challenge and change as opportunities for learning
- are solution focussed and have strategies to tackle challenge
To support students to be more resilient many hubs refer to challenges in learning as being in the "Learning Pit". Together students brainstorm strategies to help them get out of the pit and overcome challenges in their learning. These strategies are displayed around hubs for students to refer to when they are stuck.
When building self awareness students are learning to:
- acknowledge their own strengths and weaknesses; and know their optimal learning conditions.
- Be reflective about their actions and strategies they use in their learning
- Be goal focused about their learning.
- Make and justify choices about their learning.
This term students will have opportunities to develop these learner qualities through activities such as overnight camps (Year 5 and 8), Sexuality Roadshow (Year 5 & 6), Athletics Sports, Gala performances, Student Led Conferences and many more experiences that ease students out of their comfort zone.
The article attached from Skylight.org.nz identifies factors that can help build resilience if you are interested in finding out how you can support your child/ren with being more resilient.
