Room 2, Oaklands School

Andrew Deadmarsh —

Room 2 is a Year 3 class at Oaklands School.  Room 2's teacher is Mr Deadmarsh and Mrs McLeod teaches Room 2 on Wednesdays.

Room 2 have got off to a great start to 2016.  The children have quickly got used to their new reading and maths groups and are now experts at their classroom routines.  The children are very good self managers and also do a great job of keeping the classroom and cloak bay tidy.  The following is a sample of some of what Room 2 has been up to so far this year...

Writing

The children in Room 2 are very good writers!  So far in 2016 they have done some very interesting writing including recounts about the trip to Jelly Park and persuasive opinion pieces sharing their views on the current New Zealand flag options.

When writing opinion pieces the pupils have thought about the importance of using reasons to support their views.  The children have also worked to make sure that their recounts include the important details of what, who, when, where, why and how.

Maths

Everyone in Room 2 is part of a maths group and spends some time each week working with a teacher.  When they are not working with a teacher the children work on independent maths activities.  One of the most popular activities is to play a maths board game.  The children have fun playing these games with a learning buddy.   They are also practising their maths skills at the same time as they are required to add or subtract and carry out other maths operations, depending upon which square they land on or what number they roll on the dice.

Te Reo

Every Friday afternoon all of the Year 3 classes gather together for Te Reo.  The children work in their house groups rather than their classes.  The afternoon begins with all of the Year 3s in the hall for whakatauki and karakia before splitting off into groups.

Jelly Park

The highlight of the year so far has been the school trip to Jellie Park.  The weather was fine and hot and the children had a great day out, the type of day they'll remember for years to come.
