We are learning to write.....

The Casey Caterpillar story outlines the letter shapes needed to develop handwriting and to reinforce letter formation.

The Handwriting Process

The children start the handwriting process learning to recognise the shapes introduced through the Casey Caterpillar story. They work on whiteboards to develop:-

  • their fine motor control.
  • a correct 'bird beak' grip.
  • left to right orientation.
  • their ability to cross the body's mid-line.
  • their ability to form the shapes correctly.

Once the letter shapes are known, and the child can write them confidently and correctly, they are joined together to make letters. The process continues on whiteboards as letter recognition and formation is developed.

From there the children begin to join sequences of letters together to write words.

Kingston found a 'y' whilst reading - a 'gumnut up and a hanging possum tail.'

Quinn made a Valentines Day card to his Mum independently.

Sophia used the word cards from the Writing Space to write her chosen words.

Skylar used the peg boards to make an I and E. She found the matching Fast Word.

Jason improved his skill of identifying letters whilst reading his book.

Whilst at the Handwriting Space, Mahek joined the lines to correctly form letters.

The Writing Space promotes independent writing allowing the children to put together the skills taught at the teacher specific sessions.
