Rubbish free week - 26-30th August

Next week at Oaklands we are holding a 'rubbish free week'. We are asking for your support with this. Our student inquiry group - the Eco Warriors have provided a guide for classes that indicate rubbish free means:

- No plastic

- No rubbish

- No glad wrap/ cling wrap

They encourage students to use: " ... zip lock bags or beeswax wraps as long as you take them back home and use them again the next day."

Classes will be doing a 'stocktake' Monday to Thursday, with the aim to have the percentage of students going rubbish free increasing as the week progresses.

Student Individual Goals

This term students have identified one goal that they want to really focus on, and using the SMART goal format, have planned out how they will achieve this.

Goals range from reading books of a particular genre to go towards their 40 book challenge, multiplication and division facts, using complex sentences and paragraphs to identifying strategies to support them with task focus and completion.

Your child has a google classroom document that details their goal and how they will work towards achieving it. We encourage you to get your child to show you this, and have a chat about they are going.

Maths Whizz

As part of our ongoing statistics and graphing learning, students has been recording and graphing their average progressions. We introduced the idea that we will be graphing how we are going with our maths whizz, and this lead to an across the board increase in the average number of progressions achieved in the first 3 weeks of this term.

We are now a position to have our week 4 and 5 data available, and this week students will add this and update their graphs.

We have found this a worthwhile exercise as it has provided a motivation for students.

Again, this resource can be located on google classroom and we encourage you to get your child to show you their graph and have a chat about how they are going.

Mathematics

Beginning this week, we have turned our focus to fractions, ratios and decimals. We have a great resource on our online hub. By clicking on the 3 different images for fractions, ratios and decimals, you can see the learning goals.

There are videos, and links to videos, of strategies and knowledge requirements.

We are going to dovetail this with learning about financial literacy, leading up to financial literacy week towards the end of term.

Your child has been placed in a maths class with Mr Ladbrook, Mrs Fuller or Mr Forman based on their needs. Please do not hesitate to get in contact should you have any questions about your maths learning.

                Olympic Ambassador visit

This Monday the Kauri team were treated to a visit by an Olympic Ambassador -Annalie Longo, a member of the New Zealand Football Ferns.

She spoke about her experiences at the Rio games, her passion for the game, her highs and lows, and in the importance of having a dream and working hard to achieve it - no matter what that goal is.

The floor was then opened to student questions, which provided further insights into her life in sport, and outside.

Annalie was an engaging speaker, and it was great for studens to be able to hear her story.

Integrated Learning

Hub 6 is working towards answering the big question:

How might we develop a native garden at Oaklands?

This week students participated in 2 sessions: What will be the purpose of our native garden, and learning around 'design process'.

Purpose:

The focus here was to identify the possible purposes of a native garden as school. It is important to gather the thoughts and opinions of our community, both at school and outside. Therefore students worked together to develop a survey that seeks to answer the purpose question. Data is fast coming in, and in week 6 we will be analysing and graphing the results.

Design process:

Last year we followed the design process as part of our popular technology challenges, and for a large number of students this year, we used the design process as part of our Rocket Challenge. Confidence and knowledge is high, so we are looking forward to applying this to our native garden project.

What's on in week 6?

KiVa programme - This week we will be looking at unit 7 -confronting bullying as a group

Individual goals - students will be working on their individual goals this Thursday afternoon, prior to doing their passion projects. Students are working on either a knowledge, create or skill project.

Tuesday afternoon will see students developing their arts skills in music, visual art or drama.

Wednesday is a big day for us in terms of integrated learning as we look to develop some essential skills and understandings in the lead up to our planning phase of our inquiry.

Students will attend sessions on:

-  Layout design basics - an introduction to how to layout and represent plants, paths, trees and other features.

- Measuring the area behind room 12/13 to the school pool, using this information to make a 2D scale plan, and general scaling skills and confidence.

- Knowledge of plants, flowers, trees etc that fit in with our local environment

On Friday we join matua Rihari for our te reo Māori learning. Our focus is on akomanga(classroom), and understanding and confidently responding to everyday te reo in and around the classroom.

Structures we are learning include:

He aha tēnei? What is this

He rūri tēnei. This is a ruler

He aha tēnā? What is that?

He rūri tēnā. That is a ruler

He rūri tāu? Do you have a ruler? Āe / kāo - Yes/No

Kei a wai te pene?

Who has the pen?

Kei a ia - S/he does

Kei a Tom - Tom does

Homai te rūri.

Pass me the ruler

Hoatu te rūri ki a Tom

Pass the ruler to Tom

PE

With the winter sport programme having now concluded, we turn our attention to developing our run, jump and throw skills as we build up to our Kauri Athletics Day, to be held this year at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub on Wednesday the 23rd of October (week 3 of term 4).

We are without access to our long jump pits, and will be limited to short sprint practise given the rebuild, but we are nothing if not creative and will have students ready to do their best at this event.

Student writing

Students are encouraged to take on the challenge of publishing their writing to an audience outside of the classroom.

Term 2 review
