Week 5 Term 4 In Review

Mark Sy —

Check out what’s been happening in Hub 4 this week...

Literacy

This week in Miss B’s literacy class the students continued to explore and unpack the procedural format of a flowchart and how this works in constructing a set of instructions to be followed. The students also started their projects exploring a country of the world that they wanted to investigate further.

This week in Mr Sy’s literacy class we have started a new writing activity call Roll a Story. In this activity, we had to roll a dice to find out the character, setting, problem and prop that we need to use in the story. We also have been focusing on the sounds of “ea” and “ai”.

This week in Mr Reed’s literacy class we have continued to delve deeper into Instructional writing. Check out the posters below.

Maths

In Miss B’s Maths class this week we continued with our exploration of fractions and looked at finding fractions of sets using multiplication and division.

The students also completed a number knowledge check-up so they could see the progress they had made in their growing knowledge of number. They will share this with family at their student-led conferences next week.

In Mr Sy’s Maths class this week we have continued with the planning for our restaurant. This week we started developing a menu.

Here is an example! Well done Kaiya, Kinjal, Stella and Logan V.

Maths Workshops

Party Planners Inc.

Party Planners Inc. will see students use their financial literacy and budgeting skills put into practice. They will imagine that they have been given the opportunity to become party planners. Their goal… to plan a party of their choice within a set budget. They will have to think about food, decorations and even entertainment. This should be a fun adventure!

Maths In The Kitchen

In this Math Workshop, the children combine their knowledge of Maths, measuring and time, with their Literacy knowledge. This week most children have been working on researching about recipes they would like to try and make.

This week we had a group of three girls who had a go at cooking scrambled eggs. (Check the photos below!)

Last week Hub 4 had their athletic sports day where our students participated in 4 events - high jump, shot put, discus and sprints. This week we celebrated our students' success by presenting them with certificates of achievement.

Swimming Term 4

All going to plan (weather-wise), our school pool will open on Monday. This means we will be able to start of Term 4 swim programme. At this stage, our Hub 4 swimming session will be Fridays from 11:15-12:30.

CRT Day

The Hub 4 teachers are on CRT day on Monday so our classroom programmes will be run by our CRT team of teachers.

Hub 4 Home Learning Expectations

Maths Whizz - To develop fluency in Maths and relate Maths concepts to everyday life the students will be working on the Maths online programme called Maths Whizz. This is where students can accumulate points and earn rewards for their progress.

The students are to work on their Maths Whizz programmes at least 2-3 times per week as part of their home learning, working on achieving at least 4 progressions a week.

Reading - Part of our home learning expectations is that all students will read for at least 1 hour per week (at least 4 nights a week). This can be broken into four nights of 15 mins of reading or, spread across the week for smaller amounts of time that add up to 60 mins. The students then need to record this in their reading logs which can be found in the back of their C.A.R.E books. They need to record the title and author of the book, a short comment, how many minutes they read for and then have it signed by a parent/caregiver.

If your child is reading below their chronological age then they will be bringing a book home each night (except Friday). This book may be the one they are reading with their reading group or a book from their group browsing box. They are also encouraged to read other books as well. (From the library or books from home)

For all other students, it is expected that they will be reading a chapter book or a non-fiction book from home or the library. (They may on occasions be given a book to take home and read)

All reading logs will be checked on a Friday so CARE books will not go home.
