Week 11 in Review

Shannon King —

Check out what's been happening

Reading

During reading, we have been continuing our reading rotations. The children continue to be engaged in the reading rotations. We have independent reading, listening using Sunshine Online or Epic, Handwriting, teacher, reading games and follow up activities which work on key skills we focus on during our guided reading session.

It has been great to see so many students working towards their 50,100 and 150 night bookmarks for Reading. Seeing students complete their reading logs in their CARE books by adding the book they have reread from their guided session.

Our Big Book for the week was Bubbles. In this book we explored different punctuation such as commas and exclamation marks. We learnt how to read a book with fluency, expression while using punctuation. On Friday as our follow up activity from the book we all went outside with our bubble mixture and blew bubbles. We watched our bubbles fly up, fly down and POP!

Maths

In Maths, we are continuing to explore number knowledge and strategies. Knowledge is about what the students know about numbers e.g. the numbers before and after a number. Strategies are the way students solve problems given to them this could be adding 10s counting on, solving the problems in their head via imaging. We aim to have the students being able to tell us what strategies they have used and how they have solved problems. Some students are able to solve problems but are unable to tell us how. Maths-Whizz is a supplement to our maths programme and doesn't give an accurate measure of where the students are working.

Maths Whizz Certificates

Well done to all the student's that have been working hard on your maths progressions each week. We are really proud of you extending yourself and your knowledge.

Writing

In Writing, this week we have continued with our science experiments. We have been adding WOW words to hook a reader into our story. This week we wrote about making lava lamps. We filled up 3/4 of a cup with oil, then we added 1/4 of a cup of water. Next we added in a few drops of food colouring. Finally we added a fizzy tablet and watched the magic happen. The students had WOW words like - volcano, tornado, bubbles, fizzing, whirling.

Physical Education

In Physical Education, we had another session with Sports Canterbury. We continued practising our throwing and catching using a tennis ball. Coach challenged us to throw the ball up and clap as many times as we could before we caught it again. This was a challenge for some of us as our ball came down a lot faster than we thought or it would go away from us. Our favourite part of the lesson was playing tricky tag but having to stay on a line. This is a great game as we have to think about who tagged us, when they get tagged by someone else we can get up again. It is a game that never ends. If we tag someone at the same time then we have to paper, scissors, rock to see who sits down. While it was cold outside, after this lesson we worked up a sweat!

Maori

We have been completing a rotation for Maori each Friday. The three rotations include students writing their individual mihis, practising te reo Maori and the school songs, and also practising their te reo Maori pronunciation. We have also started making stars for Matariki celebrations.
