Hub 3 Week 5 - what has happened

Jo-Ann O'Loughlin —

We have enjoyed another busy week of learning in Hub 3.

Reading

This week we have enjoyed the challenges of our last week's learning based on the chapter chat book Fing.  It has been great to see students managing their time so well and working so enthusiastically on the many varied activities on offer each week.   Some students this week made a lego model of Fing. We are also impressed with the number of students choosing chapter books that they are interested in and persevering to read the complete book.  Next week our reading activities will centre on Matariki and then the following week we will begin another chapter chat book by Roald Dahl.

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Māori name for a cluster of stars which is visible in our night sky at a specific time of the year. In 2019, from 25 to 28 June, Matariki will re-appear in the dawn sky – signalling the start of the Māori New Year.

It is a time to celebrate new life, to remember those who’ve passed and to plan for the future. And it’s a time to spend with whānau and friends – to enjoy kai (food), waiata (song), tākaro (games) and haka.

Maths

We have been working on knowing our basic facts, counting forwards and backwards accurately and confidently to at least 100 in ones, twos, fives, tens.   Students are encouraged to work towards getting at least 4 progressions each week in their Maths Whizz.

Integrated Learning

We are continuing to work through our Integrated Learning topic -

  • recognising that all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive.

  • recognising that living things are suited to their particular habitat.

Cross Country

We have started training for the Kakano Cross country. The event is being held on Thursday 13th June in the afternoon.
