Investigating Cooling and Heating with Giant Ice Balls
Our Science investigations into transformation involving heating and cooling have continued this week with great interest from students.
Integrated Learning
Students have been performing experiments in relation to ice and how it melts. Students have been adding salt and food colouring to see the effects that salt has on the ice. We have been recording our observations and developing our scientific skills around states of matter and heating and cooling. We then had a bit of fun and dropped the ice from a height to see the impact of gravity on a giant ice ball.
Reading
Students have been developing their skills around note taking and researching. They have been using reading to learn about new concepts such as convection, conduction and radiation. They have been making awesome progress in developing research skills, understanding what information is important and what they need to include to deliver informed and accurate answers to questions.
Maths
Students have been learning about temperature, using thermometers, reading thermometer scales and investigating the differences in temperatures in cities around the world in comparison to Christchurch.
You will be able to find examples of their learning in the Maths Hero Post which will be shared with you this week.
Jump Jam
The Yr 5/6 and Yr 7 ⁄ 8 Jump Jam teams performed their Jump Jam routine to the students today as a practice performance for their competition on Saturday. The Yr 5/6 students did very well in their first performance before a crowd, despite being very nervous. They displayed lots of expression and energy.
Students will be performing at 1:25pm on Saturday at Cashmere High Auditorium. Our Jump Jam students will be there early at 12:15pm to do a practice and get ready. Tickets are on sale here. They are Year ⅚ Freshman and performing at 1:25pm-2:40pm.
We wish them all the best of luck for the competition.
