Leadership - Get involved and make a difference!

Bryan Brown —

Our Leadership Programme is running hot!

THE NEW CARE MATRIX SYSTEM - SILVER

We have so many students working on their Silver CARE Certificate, here's what they need to do/sign off to earn the illusive award.

  • Start a new CARE Matrix in their Home Learning Book
  • Students need to get 6 highlights in Community, Active Thinking, Respect and Excellence (In the Bronze criteria)
  • Once students have 6 highlights they have earned their mini certificate for Silver.
  • In the Silver Leadership column, students need one highlight in each area of Community, Active Thinking, Respect and Excellence.
  • Completed at least 6 Home Learning Challenges.

Once you have earned your four certificates, have four highlights in the Silver Leadership Column and completed your Home Learning Challenges you have earned your Silver Award.

HOME LEARNING CHALLENGES

Year 7/8 students need to complete Home Learning Challenges as part of Leadership Programme.

We have a strong focus on Leadership in Year 7/8 at Oaklands School. Home Learning Challenges also link to our CARE Values and are one aspect of our Leadership Programme.

There are a wide variety of home learning challenges available to students. Click on the link to view the challenges that students may choose from.

Some popular choices of home learning challenges so far this year have seen students..........

  • Designing and preparing a 3 course meal for their families.
  • Undertaking work experience in varied and interesting locations eg hair salons and Toyworld.
  • Researching and practicing different photography techniques.
  • Visiting high school open nights.
  • Researching family trees.
  • Participating in events eg Weetbix Try and Mud Run.
  • Improving fitness by either running, biking or swimming over a number of weeks.
  • Preparing travel itineraries.
  • Performing at least 20 different random acts of kindness.
  • Teaching a family member to use a new ICT tool.
  • Organising and making a donation to a charity.
  • Designing their own challenges eg helping out on the farm.

We are very proud of all of the hard work that the students are putting into these challenges and we look forward to seeing what interesting things they will challenge themselves with as the year progresses.

BIG BUDDY PROGRAMME

This year our students have been involved in our Big Buddy Programme. Our Year 7/8 Students get stuck in with our Year 1 buddies in the school garden, cooking with ingredients we have planted and grown, cooperative games and reading books to them. This has been such an amazing programme!

Here are the reasons why our junior buddies love working with their big buddies.

  • They hold our hand when we are nervous
  • They help us when we are scared
  • They show us how to dig and plant seeds in the ground
  • They pull out the tough weeds when they're stuck
  • Make sure hands are protected by putting gloves on them
  • Brush us down when I get dirty in the garden
  • Help me try new food I haven't eaten before
  • Make sure that we are safe
  • Read books to us
  • Listen to us read to them
  • Help me make new friends

We feel so lucky to have our fantastic students making a big difference in the lives of others!

KAKANO CROSS COUNTRY

Here is another great example of how our students have got involved and made a difference in their community.

On Thursday this week, our Head Students with the help of other Year 7/8 students,  set up the Cross Country course, guided and encouraged students to participate, ran the stations in the Cross Country and organised all of the audio and music for the students who were not running.

We got so many positive comments, not just from parents and teachers but also the students little buddies. They were so happy to see their big buddies out there and often would run faster and give more effort after seeing them cheer them on.

TE REO WITH OUR BUDDIES

This is another area where we are looking for our students to show leadership.

We have made the decision that part of ourTe Reo lesson on a Friday afternoon is going to be spent with our junior buddies, helping them learn new words, saying their Mihi, playing Te Reo games with them and singing some waiata.

We believe that this is a great way that all of our students can give back to our school community and continue to develop positive friendships with students, teachers, staff and their peers.

We look forward to seeing this develop over time.
