Year 7 and 8 Leadership Inquiries

Steve Ladbrook —

How are the Year 7/8s going as leaders at Oaklands School?

Leadership is a major component of the Year 7 and 8 programme at Oaklands School.  As a result, there are many opportunities around this.

Students have many responsibilities they can do to show leadership - these include such things as Garden Club Monitors and Librarians. In addition, there are the senior leadership positions like House Leader, Head Girl, Sports Co-Ordinator.

For the majority of students they have one of two roles; Peer Mediator and Physical Activity Leaders. All students in these roles, as well as the senior leadership positions, receive ongoing training throughout the year.

This term the students have been inquiring into how they are going as a leader. This involved the students:

  • Designing survey questions to get feedback
  • Creating graphs using Google Sheets and creating Word Clouds.
  • Analysing trends and patterns in the graphs to determine areas for improvement.
  • Creating an Action Plan where they have chosen three goals and articulated what they are going to do to achieve them.

This unit of work has been heavily integrated across the learning areas. This has involved a statistical inquiry with procedural writing. Integrating topics, like the photo at the beginning of this article, is what life is like and it has the added bonus of getting students  to make connections across different learning areas.

Check out the photo gallery for some of the graphs the students made.
