MIXX Korfball - Under 15 New Zealand Rep

Rebecca Pilbrough —

Year 8 - Meadow Lilly

I have been playing Korfball for 3 years I play for Christchurch Central as part of the Mixx community we train once a week every Monday for an hour we also have a tournament every 4-6 weeks with the other teams across Canterbury.

Where did you first get involved?

When Mixx visited school to do a session and introduce the sport to the senior school

What do you enjoy about korfball?

It is a sport equally divided up by boys and girls which means you get a lot of play time.

Itś fast on your feet and you get to experience a lot of game plays as there is a small number of players on one side of the court.

What is korfball?

Korfball is a game that is mixed gender which is similar to Netball and Basketball and is played with two teams of 4 girls and 4 boys.

What advice would you give to someone who might want to get into korfball?

Make sure you have fast feet and always defend your player.

What are the important skills needed?

Being able to know where you should be when plays are being made. Having a good strategy with your team mates. Communication is key.

You were recently selected in a very special team. Tell us about this and what process you went through?

I recently was selected for the New Zealand Representative U15 team for Korfball.
I had to show up to Marian College and do a 4 hour trial process. Through that we had 30 minute games going back to back with selectors observing us and picking those successful for the teams. There were 13 girls and only 7 were picked for the team, as well as boys.
I had to wait a week and half to find out if I got in.

Will you continue korfball at high school?

Yes I would love to keep going and get into the Hillmorton Korfball team.

Any final thoughts / messages to students about believing in yourself/ taking on a challenge/ going for gold?

Giving up is your greatest weakness!
