It's getting busy in the Year 7/8 Hub.

Lance Muller —

There is lots going on in the Year 7/8 hub at the moment. We are certainly living our Hub Whakatauki : Ma mahi ka ora! Through hard work you will prosper!

Technology

Technology continues each week at Lincoln with students engaged in a range of hands on learning activities.

In Woodwork the students are making speaker boxes. Sanding, painting, soldering are just a few of the skills they are learning.

In Science this week the students dissected Green Lip Mussels. Attention to detail, fine motor skills and careful  writing up of what they found were the order of the day here.

This weeks challenge in  Food Technology was cupcakes. Coloured . icing and a variety of toppings allowed for creativity and flare from the students. Photos of your child with their cupcake have been added to their Technology report that was shared with you last week.

In Textiles and Design the students are working on a variety of different projects. The Design Process involves careful consideration of stakeholders needs, prototyping and then final manufacture. The students enjoy the amount of  choice they get in Textiles and Design and the sense of achievement and satisfaction when a project is seen through is obvious.

In the  Digi Tech  group, students are working on game design using a Scratch and Hopscotch. A small group of boys were also working on the Khan Academy site. Each week students sit with the teacher and explain the code running in the background of their game. It is very impressive to listen to them talk about what they have done.

Technology continues to be a highlight of the week for most of our students. Be sure to ask your child about what they have been up to.

Novel Study -  This continues to be one of our big focuses in Literacy. The students have started well with many managing their time effectively and keeping on top of their reading and activity schedule.

Writing -  This year we are trying something new in Writing. We have entered the Intermediate Writers Award. The Intermediate Writers Award is a unique non-fiction essay competition for NZ Intermediate Students, Years 7 and 8. The Award is designed to offer a competitive and authentic opportunity for students to engage in purposeful writing.

The topic that the students will be writing on is Power to the People! The topic will see us learning all about the power of protest and social movement. Click on this link to see some of the topics and learning we will be doing.  We are excited about this Writing opportunity and we are looking forward to seeing the Writing that the students produce. Watch this space!

CantaMaths -  We have two teams entered into the CantaMaths Competition on  Wednesday 28 August. Xiyi, Rani, Caleb and Marcus will represent us in the  year 8 competition while Matthew, Thomas, Iris and Rose B will fly the Oaklands flag at the year 7 event.

Ellesmere Speech Contest - This is coming up on Monday 2 September. This year the speech competition will be held at West Rolleston Primary School. We will be sending one year 7 and one year 8 to represent Oaklands. Students wishing to be considered for entry are currently drafting arguments for consideration.

QUIZ NIGHT - This is coming up on Friday 20 September. All funds raised go towards the Year 8 trip to Wellington. Get your team of 6 together and come along for an evening of fun and laughter. See attached information poster for more details.

Thanks to all of our year 7/8 families for your continued support. We really appreciate it.
