Year 4 Herb Farm and Oderings Nursery Trip

Tash Baker —

The Year 4 students visited Green Gold Gardens and Oderings Nursery as a part of their learning around the Food Forest.

In Week 3 all of the Year 4 students visited Green Gold Gardens and Oderings Nursery to find out more about how to successfully grow plants from the seed stage right through to harvesting.

Green Gold Gardens had some very interesting systems in place to grow herbs in water and they also had glass houses set up with heat and lighting to trick the plants into thinking it is spring all year round. At Green Gold Gardens we learned about the process the plants go through to get from seed to kitchen as they sell a lot of their produce to restaurants around New Zealand. One of the plants we looked at was Lemongrass and we all decided it smelt just like lemonade popsicles!

At Oderings Nursery we learned how to sew a seed correctly and the steps to take to make sure our plants grow successfully. Every student followed the steps to plant their own bulb and we are looking forward to hearing how well they grow at home! At Oderings Nursery we saw some amazing machines and conveyor belt systems that plant seeds and transplant small plants without human help - one of the highlights of the visit there.

We are going to be using our new learning to help us to take care of the Food Forest and also grow our own herbs and vegetables this term.
