Congratulations to our students that achieved their Bronze Award this weeks in CARE Assembly. There were also a few other students who got awarded a Principals Award and the Bucket Filler Award. Tino Pai!
In our waka students are working on achieving their CARE awards - Community, Active Thinking, Respect and Excellence. Please check their CARE books and locate the matrix to see what goals they are working on and to encourage a certain focus of what they can work on at school.
Before School -
You may have noticed that we have put some Literacy and Numeracy activities and games down one end of the waka each morning. This is to encourage mileage, consolidation and conversations. Some students will tick off 2 activities each day and they will work towards getting a reward for their extra mahi/work. Please make sure that you child arrives early enough to work on these activities if you spot their name or even have a conversation about this with them.
Reading -
Teachers are sending 'take home books' each week to work on reading mileage and this is an expectation that you will work on this. If you need extra books please talk to your childs reading teacher. Remember the focus is not what 'colour' they are on, but to work on fluency and making their reading sound good. You may read parts of the book. (Make it Fun).
Measurement - Hero Comments
This is our last week with learning about certain aspects of Measurement. We have had a focus on making comparisons with length and capacity. Using non-standard units to measure length, telling the time and conversations about temperature. This week a Hero post will be available for you to check certain learning intentions and next steps with learning.
Integrated Learning - Science
We have made Pop Corn - We were able to listen to it cook, make comments of what it looks like, taste like and smells like. We were able to use good vocabulary words to describe the pop corn. The hardest part was doing some "Mindful Eating". This is a strategy from our Pause - Breath - Smile. You place the food on your tongue, then close your mouth and let it sit, then chew it slowly.
Exploration Time - Friday Afternoons
Last week was our first session to do this. Team Patere was humming with excitement. Students got to pick their top 3 choices of what they would like to learn about and explore. Activities include - Japanese, Games, Art, Coding, Kapa Haka, Sports, Football, Invasion Games, Clay and Lego, Crochet and Castles. This will continue through out the term each Friday afternoon. Students will work on explicit skills, Key Competencies and develop Agency with their learning.
Gymnastics -
We have started learning about the movements of "flight". This includes learning the Cow Leap, Stag Leap and the Scissor Leap, 1/4 turns and 1/2 turns on the mats. You should get your child to demonstrate this at home.
International Peace Week -
This week is to reflect on World Peace. You may notice certain symbols and posters around our environment. One of our Learning Station activities was to design a Peace Feather with their name. The Senior students designed a huge poster to acknowledge this and it was displayed on the hall wall.
