Week 7
Zones of Regulation
This week we did a series of workshops on defining and understanding emotions as part of our well being learning with students. We will looked at a range of emotions, how we can manage them them, and how we can talk about the 'colour zone' we may be feeling.
Team Building
Building on from our Kindness Project, we will looked at team building and how we can work together successfully to complete tasks. To practice working in a team students worked on a Top Team challenge in small groups. Students had to design a new challenge for 'Top Team'.
We also looked at the learner qualities that we need to be successful when working in a team. We will continue designing our Top Team challenge next week.
Maths Whizz
This week we have continued working towards the 8 week challenge on our Maths Whizz. To achieve this students need to achieve an average of 3 progressions a week over the period of 8 weeks.
Students should be spending an hour on their Maths week each week. It is expected that students work on this as part of their home learning.
Congratulations to the following students who have received Maths Whizz certificates this week.
Maths Challenges
This week we have completed Maths Challenges around area and perimeter. We have also looked at quadrilaterals and triangles. Students have made their own tetris art and found the perimeter and area of each shape in their tetris artwork. We have also started looking at tangrams.
Mihi / pepeha
'A mihi is a greeting while a pepeha is a form of introduction that establishes identity and heritage. In formal settings, the pepeha forms part of an individual's mihi.'
Students have been working on theirs this week, with a number having completed a visual mihi via google slides or Storyjumper. We will be introducing 'Flipgrid' a easy to use video application where students can present their mihi / pepeha. This is a fantastic learning tool as students will be able to view their video and identify areas for improvement.
Portrait Art
Students have continued working on their portrait art. We have been following tutorials to help improve our portraits.
Drama- Regulating Robots
This week we have started a drama project. This looks at why rules are necessary in social situations and the relationship between rules, freedom and creativity. Students have been designing robots that will help them around the house. We have discussed what behaviours might be important for our robots and have practiced acting out how our robot might move and interact.
NZ Music Month
May is NZ music month, and we will be doing some learning about Kiwi musicians. We continued on with this this week and looked at a range of kiwi artists throughout the decades.
Kelly Sports/Fitness
Kelly Sports is a company that provides at school and after school sport/PE/fitness programmes. This week they will began working with hubs with each pastoral care class having a 30 minute session with their instructors. Hub 6 have their sessions on Friday. We are starting to learn a range of activities / games we can incorporate into our fitness and PE programme, and some new games to play at break times.
