Year 0/1 Breakout: Te Reo

Alicia Hebbend —

During our afternoon breakout programme our students having been exploring their mihi (personal introductions) in their te reo class with Miss H.

Breakout is our afternoon programme where our students get a wide taste of our New Zealand Education Curriculum (outside of reading writing and maths). This term our students explored 4 out of 5 of the following subjects: Physical Education, PMP, Art, Health/Drama and Te Reo.

As a part of our te reo formal lesson we have explored our children's personal mihi. This template will be added to throughout their school life at Oaklands School. A mihi is formally introducing ourselves through a maori world lens which explores the importance of who has helped make us into who we are and where we come from.

Through learning our mihi we also explored kupu (maori words) and skills for public speaking, such as stand straight, not playing with clothes, looking at our audience.

Your child's mihi can be found in their te reo book that goes home in their reading folder.
