Rubbish Free Lunches

Karen Haines —

Rubbish free lunches can offer a number of challenges when you are planning what to put in lunch boxes.

Rubbish free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the red bin. That means, no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods. Here are some more ideas for rubbish free lunches that you might like to try:

  • Make a tray of muffins and keep them frozen. Remove one each morning and place it in the lunch box – it will thaw by lunch time.

  • Pop your own popcorn and pack it in a paper bag. Remind your child to pack the paper bag back into their lunch box.

  • Cut your own cheese slices and place them with crackers in a smaller reusable container.

  • Make a smoothie at home and store it in a cold thermos that holds the temperature until morning tea or lunch time.
