Canterbury Schools Duathlon @ Ruapuna
Nearly 1200 athletes competing - and we were there.
A year is a long time between events, and it was needed after the driving rain and and cold conditions of last year's event.
However, it has not affected the enthusiasm for competing as witnessed by the record near 1200 athletes from 93 schools that entered the 2018 version of the Canterbury Schools Duathlon.
Athletes raced in year levels and gender groups, with all year levels doing the 2km first run leg and 1km last run leg. In between, the year 5/6 athletes cycled twice around a 3 km course on the race track, whilst the year 7/8 athletes completed 3 laps.
The weather was perfect for racing, warm and lacking in wind, a far cry from last year's challenging conditions.
We sent a team of 32 athletes, fresh from their success at the Kauri Run / Bike / Run. A number of us were taking part for the first time, and are all the better for gaining the experience of participating in a tough and personally challenging event.
Well done to all Oaklands' athletes. You participated to the best of your ability, dug deep when faced with the 'pain barrier' and displayed your CARE values throughout the event.
A big 'thank you' goes out to our wonderful parents /caregivers who provided transport and support to our amazing athletes at the event. We hugely appreciate your support.
Bring on the 2019 event!
