Writing in Hub 1

Emma Frampton —

We have been learning about lots of different topics this week and using our writing skills to express our ideas about the topics.

Hector's World

The children have been watching a series of interactive video lessons about cyber safety and how to be safe online.  The particular lessons that we are doing relate to personal information and why it is important to keep our information that makes us special to ourselves and not share it online.  Each video lesson has games and activities that reinforce the learning.  For more information about the lessons or to watch the videos at home please refer to this link - Hector's World Lesson Plans - Videos.

Valentine's Day

On the Whakamata Stations, we had word cards and writing templates where the children can independently write a valentine's message to a friend or family member.

The Best Part of Me

The children have been reflecting on themselves and what makes them special a lot this week.  The children have thought really hard and decided what the best part of themselves is.  They then drew a picture plan of their idea and completed independent writing using the modelling book for support.  The children enjoyed sharing their writing with a buddy and/or the teacher and it was an awesome, positive exercise to do together.  We learnt so much about each other and what makes us special!

Casey the Caterpillar

The children who are new to school have been learning about Casey the Caterpillar.  Casey the Caterpillar is a programme where the children listen to a book that tells a story about a caterpillar.  In the book, the caterpillar comes across lots of objects and characters who are different shapes.  The children can then form the shapes in their writing books.  Once we know and can form all the shapes, then we can start joining shapes together to make letters.  This programme is awesome for handwriting and children learning correct letter formation!  For more information, please see this link - Casey the Caterpillar.

Sun Safety

The children have also been learning about how to be safe in the sun!  They have completed a cut and paste activity which worked on developed their cutting and fine motor skills.  The children had to identify which items they would pack into their bag that would keep them sun safe.  We also have an interactive poster where the children can make sentences about being sun safe.
