Matthew Reed —

Week in review

Check out what’s been happening in Hub 4 this week.

Welcome back to the final term of 2019. We would also like to welcome back the wonderful student teacher Kacee Green.

Thank you to all parents as we are all really thrilled that all students in Hub 4 have their hats. Keep it up!

Athletics

This week students have been practicing their high jump, shot put and discus in preparation for Kauri Athletics next week at Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub on the 23rd of October.

Next week on Wednesday, 23rd of October the Year 4 Hub will be departing on the buses for Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub at 8:45AM.

Literacy

This week in the Year 4 Hub for literacy all students have been crafting a narrative or persuasive piece of writing for their term 4 writing assessment.

Maths

In Mr Reed’s class this week the students have been using Numicon equipment to explore the patterns and relationships that happen when multiplying different groups of numbers.

This week the maths group working with Miss B started their exploration of proportions and ratios. We started by unpacking what the word “proportion” means and how this is related to fractions, decimals and percentages. The students also looked at fractions and their sizes and how to identify what fraction is bigger than another. They were also introduced to equivalent fractions and learned a new strategy for how to check if different fractions are equivalent.

The remaining group worked with Mr Sy and continued to develop their mathematical thinking through Number Talks. Next week the groups will swap over, with one group exploring proportions and ratios and the other continuing to develop their Number Talks skills.

Maths Workshops

In addition to developing the children’s knowledge of Proportions and Ratios, Hub 4 will be running different math workshops. The aim of the workshops is to develop the children’s knowledge about different aspects of measurement (Money, Time, Volume and Capacity).

Over the next 3 weeks, the children will be getting a little taster of each workshop. Then they will be able to make a choice regarding which aspect of measurement they would like to explore further.
