Week 6 in the Year 2 Blue Hub
Have a look at some of the things that have been happening in our hub this week
Writing
This week classes have been doing a variety of things for writing. Some children have been trying to make their writing more interesting using describing words.
'She has sharp teeth like knives' - Briti
'Her claws are sharper than a sword' - Yujin
'Her eyes are scary, like she is about to eat you' - Adele
Reading
Running records are almost completed and there will be some movement between groups and / or teachers by the end of the week. Please feel free to contact the teacher your child reads with if you have any questions or just want to have a chat about how they are doing.
Maths
Talk to your child about what they have been learning this week for maths. Some children have been learning to tell the time, while others have been learning to count on and back in tens or solve problems by counting on on back from the largest number.
Well done to Hiba, Logan and Esther and for winning their Maths Whizz certificates this week. 2PM leads the total number of progressions made this week for all children in the class , followed closely by 2AH and 2JO. Keep up the good work children and maybe it will be YOU winning a certificate next week.
Matariki
This week we have been learning about Matariki. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades and it signals the start of the Māori new year. Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki).
There are many stories about the star cluster of Matariki. One is of when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children. The god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, was so angry about this that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.
Have a look at the photos below to see pictures of some of the activities that children participated in.
Inquiry
We are continuing to learn about sustainability this term. Children should be starting to think about how they might take action to help turn the mood of the Earth from sad to happy.
CARE Certificates and Other Awards
Well done to all the children that received a CARE Certificate or a book mark for tremendous reading or another type of award.
