Our Cultural Narrative Learning

Alex HORN —

We have been learning about our Cultural Narrative and some of the Māori creation myths for New Zealand.

This term in the Year 4 Hub we have been learning about our school Cultural Narrative. We read two myths and did a series of follow up activities about these myths. A myth is a story made up long ago that was used to explain how things worked or happened before humans had the ability to use science to figure them out. The myths we read were:

- The Creation of Wai Pounamu

- Tu Te Raki

We mapped Tu Te Raki's journey around the South Island as he made it inhabitable for humans, learning a little about the myths for how these places were created and a little bit about where these places actually are in New Zealand.

We also read a story about the creation of the Wellington Harbour called "The Taniwha of Wellington Harbour" by Moira Wairama.

We had a lot of fun exploring these myths and even created an Explain Everything video to share the journey Tu Te Raki made in the team assembly we hosted this week.

You can watch the video and read the stories bellow.
