Mr Ladbrook's Literacy Class have been inferencing.
In texts, authors leave out information which requires the reader to infer the meaning.
Inferencing is a key area which the Hub 5 readers need to work on as it came up as a next step for a lot of students.
So what is inferencing? Inferencing in a nut shell is reading between the lines. In order to do this, readers need to use clues from the text and connect this with their prior knowledge to make an inference. To help the Hub 5 readers with this, they have been reading poems where they have to guess what is being described.
The students were given this poem
If I were a ____________________
If I were a _______________,
I would range over farms, plains, houses, cities, and seas.
I would beat against the window panes of houses with warm fires inside.
I would whip the leaves off trees.
I would flood rivers while I could, for all too soon, the sun will peep out from behind a cloud
and I must pick up my black billowing skirts and leave to whine over the oceans and beyond
Here are some of the inference made
I think this poem is describing…A raining cloud. This is because:
- "I would range over farms, plains, houses, cities, and seas." because every one word is inside.
- "for all too soon, the sun will peep out from behind a cloud and I must pick up my black billowing skirts and leave" because I am a cloud and the sun will be peeking out behind me.
- "I would whip the leaves off trees. I would flood rivers while I could with my rain" I would whip the leaves off with my wind

I think this poem is describing a storm.
- I think it’s a storm because” it rangers over plan’s house and sites.
- I think it’s a storm because” the sun will peep out and the night will go.
- I think it’s a storm because” it would beat against the window.

I think this poem is describing… a rain cloud. This is because:
- “I would flood rivers while I could” because the rain from rain clouds can flood rivers
- “for all too soon, the sun will peep out from behind a cloud and I must pick up my black billowing skirts and leave” because the sun makes the rain evaporate
- “I would range over farms, plains, houses, cities, and seas” because clouds can fly over a lot of things
