Hub 2 Week 4

Liz Brash —

Week 4 in Review.

This week the students have settled into the routines of Hub 2.

The students are responding well to being greeted in the morning. Being able to greet the students each morning is an important way to set them up for learning and check to see how they are feeling.

In Reading, we are continuing to read explore ideas within the texts we are reading. We have been really impressed with the students in their Reading sessions. They are beginning to understand their goals or WALTs we have assigned to their groups and are working hard to achieve them.

Our Friday focus is a big book follow up task this week Miss Doig and Mrs G's class read Camouflage and Mrs King's read the kitten for the king. Miss Doig and Mrs G's class made Lizards on a Camoflague wall and Mrs Kings class made crowns. Follow up tasks cement the knowledge the children have talked about throughout the week and are fun and enjoyable.

In Writing, the students are continuing to learn how to write in their journals and their guided books. This week we constructed a story about eating Pears on Wednesday morning. This was a real treat from the school garden and a great hook for writing.

In Maths, last week we finished our strand by making a graph with M&Ms we used all our previous learning to help us. we have introduced the students to things they can do when they are not with the teacher and have reintroduced the children to number talks and worked with talk partners to solve problems. We have enjoyed seeing the children enjoying Maths and showing us all the different ways they can solve problems.

In Swimming, we have been building on our water confidence. The Hub 2 students are able to show each other how to put their heads under the water and float on their backs and fronts.

During Integrated Topic, we have continued to talk about our feelings, looking at the names of feelings and how they make us feel on the inside and out.  We will continue to work on developing strategies to deal with different emotions throughout the term. We have finished learning about how to be safe when using technology through Hectors World. We have also been revising how to be SunSmart, the children had to cut SunSmart items out and paste them into a bag to take to the beach.

Te Reo - We are learning how to ask people how they are which fits in with understanding emotions and how we are feeling.

ESOL - The ESOL students prepared the Pears for our snack on Wednesday.
